Tesco starts c-store chain in Japan
Story 3

A NEW era of convenience stores (c-store) has dawned upon Japan with the opening of Tesco Express, the first UK grocery chain store in the country.

Tesco ventured into the competitive Japanese grocery market four years ago when it bought over C Two-Network Co Ltd, which operates just over 100 outlets under the Tsurukame brand. The British retailer has since moved on to set up the Tesco Express chain, with a target for 25 stores by next February.

Mindful of the challenges ahead, Tesco has considered the locals’ lifestyle habits, paying particular attention to space constraints in their homes and to their preference for fresh foods.

Furthermore, the c-store format will better serve the requirements of Japan’s ageing population — population statistics indicate that 27% of the Japanese will fall within the 65 and above age range in the next decade or so.
