Franchising continues to be “the preferred strategy” for companies, entrepreneurs and investors looking to either expand their operations or invest in new ventures.

This is particularly true of Singapore. Speaking at the official opening of Franchising & Licensing Asia (FLAsia) 2009 on October 15, Singapore’s Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Trade & Industry and Education, S Iswaran, said: “In Singapore the number of franchise concepts has grown from 380 to about 500 today. This is a 30% increase over five years. Last year, the franchise industry in Singapore generated some S$8 billion (US$ 5.3 billion) in revenue.

“Franchising is now a preferred strategy for SMEs. This is because it is easily scalable with minimal investment and manpower costs. Larger companies can also tap on the networks of their
established franchise partners to grow regionally and globally.”
