‘You’re Hired’, Singapore’s first retail reality challenge



THE reality TV craze has hit even Singaporean retailers. For the past three months, the Cold Storage Group (CSG) has been busy conducting Singapore’s first-ever retail reality challenge. The challenge saw 78 teams of 312 tertiary students battling it out in round-byround eliminations, with the winning team guaranteed management trainee jobs sponsored by the CSG.!

Round one

Called “You’re Hired”, the retail reality challenge aimed to put the tertiary students through a series of retailing challenges based on real-life business scenarios, which would prepare them for the retail industry.

The first elimination round took place on July 16, when the 78 teams competed outside 78 7-Eleven convenience stores. Six teams were shortlisted in the “Do or Die” challenge, in which the groups competed against each other in a race to sell the most First Choice Water and First Choice Potato Chips priced at S$0.80 (US$0.48) a piece in one hour.

The challenge demanded excellent selling abilities and good customer service of the teams, on top of handling the important task of keeping stocks and cashflow in check, as penalties were imposed should either go missing.

The teams had set up shop outside the 7-Eleven stores during the peak 12pm- 1pm lunch hour, and were judged based not only on their sales results but also on their creativity, customer service, teamwork and their willingness to go the “x-tra mile”.

The six teams which made it to the finals comprised two groups each from Temasek and Singapore polytechnics, and one group each from Nanyang and Ngee Ann polytechnics.

Round two
These teams went on to compete against each other in the second round in August, when they were tasked to conjure up and execute a real-life oneday trial business plan at pre-assigned stores within the CSG.

The plans, implemented in six stores on August 18 during retail hours, constituted 40% of the total score. Game marshals on site judged the teams on aspects such as customer service, teamwork, drive-sales and key-performance indicators, managing budget, going the extra mile and the ability to think on their feet.

Round three
The teams presented their business plans on September 3. Ten per cent of the final score went to the creativity and relevance of their strategies, while 50% to their presentation skills and professionalism during the presentation.

The teams, geared in officewear, were quizzed by the judges and assessed on their ability to handle the questions professionally.

To gain competitive edge, one group brought cooked-food samples while others used promotional props and other attention-grabbing presentation tools.

The results
The first prize (S$3,000 in cash) plus guaranteed management trainee jobs with the CSG and scholarships went to Team Saffron from Temasek Polytechnic.

The Retail Reality Challenge is part of CSG’s “Live To Learn, Back To Work” community project, which aims to promote retailing as a career and heighten awareness of the importance of life-long learning.

CSG, a subsidiary of public-listed parent Dairy Farm International, is one of Singapore’s oldest retailers with 102- year history. With about 6,700 staff in 500 stores, the CSG umbrella includes leading retailers such as Cold Storage Supermarket, Shop N Save supermarket, Giant hypermarket, Guardian pharmacy, 7-Eleven and Photo Finish.
