Asia-Pacific's top retailers feted and honoured

It was a gathering of retail industry luminaries and professionals from the region and beyond in Beijing where cocktails and conversations mingled to the delightful sounds of harp music, followed by fine dining, a lively on-stage jazz performance and awards galore. Retail Asia brings you the highlights of the second Retail Asia Pacific Top 500 Awards.

The place:
The ballroom of the Shangri- La Hotel, Beijing, China. The occasion:A celebration of the region's top retailers at the Retail Asia-Pacific Top 500 Awards Ceremony Gala Dinner on 7 September 2005.

The Retail Asia-Pacific Top 500 Awards is the first regional awards for the retail industry. Launched in October 2004 in Singapore, the second Retail Asia-Pacific Top 500 Awards was held to coincide with the 12th Asian Retailers Convention & Exhibition (ARCE) in Beijing, China.

The region's leading retailers and industry professionals retail industry luminaries and professionals attended the gala for the unveiling of the 2005 top performing retail organisations in each of the 14 economies in the Asia-Pacific region, culminating in the announcement of the "Asia Pacific - Best of the Best" in recognition of the most illustrious and the most superlative retail organisations of the Top 500.

This year, the "Asia-Pacific Best of the Best' title was awarded to the following retail companies (in alphabetical order):

  • Central Retail Corporation, Thailand
  • Dairy Farm Company Ltd, Hong Kong
  • Dairy Farm International Holdings Ltd, Singapore
  • Foodstuffs Ltd, New Zealand
  • Ito-Yokado Group, Japan

The No.1 retail companies in the 14 economies were short-listed and interviewed by Euromonitor International. The interview format contains a set of qualitative and quantitative criteria which includes value proposition and CRM (excellence in customer service, merchandising offerings, store operations and marketing communications); management and operations infrastructure and process (technology, human resources and corporate culture); and record of operations.

A panel of three independent judges then reviewed the responses and gave scores for each of these candidates. Chief judge Freddy Soon, who is senior vicepresident, CEO office of Hyflux Ltd, said: "Retail is so much a part of the social, cultural and economic fabric of a country or city, linked with the mores, lifestyles and incomes of the people. It is quite difficult to pick one overall winner. Hence, the Best of the Best award provides the 'best' recognition for these well-deserving retail organisations."

The gala event in Beijing started off with the presentation of the "Top Retailer" Awards - Gold, Silver and Bronze - to the top three retail companies in 14 markets - Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan and Vietnam [see chart for winners].

Apart from the country and regional winners, the Top 10 retail companies in eight retail formats - Clothing, Footwear & Accessories, Convenience Stores, Department Stores, Health & Beauty Stores, Hypermarkets, Hardline Stores, Supermarkets and Other Retailers - received special certificates.

The 2nd Top 500 Retail Asia-Pacific Top 500 Awards is presented by Retail Asia Publishing (organiser), Euromonitor International (official market information provider) and KPMG (principal programme partner), and sponsored by VISA International (principal sponsor) and Epson Singapore (co-sponsor), special trophies and certificates were given to the top performing retail organisations in various categories.
