Vietnam Retail Sales Grew Almost 21% In 2006

RETAIL sales for goods and services in Vietnam grew 20.9% in 2006 to VND580.7 trillion (US$37.5 billion), reported the local media, citing the government’s General Statistics Office.

The office further estimated retail sales for the first two months of 2007 to reach VND112 trillion, an increase of 24.1%, adding that the individual sector maintained the biggest sales with combined revenues of VND63.2 trillion, or 56.4% of total retail sales.

Meanwhile, the private sector reported revenues of VND32.1 trillion for the two months, or 28.7% of total retail sales, up 30.5% from the previous year.

The government also said that the foreign-invested sector registered the highest surge of 30.8% onyear to VND3.2 trillion, making up 2.8% of the country’s retail sales.

The trade sector is said to have contributed the largest proportion to the country’s total retail sales at VND92.3 trillion, or 82.4% of total retail sales. The hotel and restaurant sector followed at VND12.5 trillion, or 11.2% of total sales, while the service sector registered VND5.9 trillion, or 5.2%.
