Metro to build largest store in China

GERMANY-BASED Metro told local media that its 2006 sales in China reached RMB9.37 billion (US$1.21 billion), climbing 24.1% over the previous year.

The retailer previously announced plans to build its largest store spanning 6.4ha in the Baohe District of China’s provincial capital, Hefei. It opened six stores last year and currently operates more than 30 outlets in the country.

Metro, which entered Chinese market in 1995, earlier reported 2006 global sales of around RMB60 billion (US$80.45 billion), an increase of 7.5%.
