THE RETAIL ACADEMY OF SINGAPORE CERTIFICATE AWARD 2008 - Retailers arm staff to take on challenges ahead
Story 12 - Retail Rendezvous

RETAILERS from across Singapore gathered at the Orchard Hotel in May this year to congratulate 420 graduates from The Retail Academy of Singapore, in the fourth Certificate Award ceremony.

Gracing the event this year were guest-of-honour Png Cheong Boon, acting chief executive of SPRING Singapore, Dato’ Dr Jannie Tay, chairman of the Retail Academy of Singapore, and Professor Paul Freathy, director at the Institute for Retail Studies at the University of Stirling, UK.

In her opening speech, Dato’ Dr  Tay emphasised the timeliness of the 78 companies who sponsored their staff to acquire the necessary skills in light of “new challenges and uncertainties” not
only in the retail arena, but also across the globe. “The recent problems of the financial market, rising food prices, rising oil prices and rising inflation pose new challenges to all of us in Singapore.
We may also be hit by a global recession. To meet these challenges, we need staff who are more knowledgeable and who have better skills,” she said.
