Retail developers at ICSC Asia Expo pin hopes on Asian markets

WITH the news of the global financial meltdown just fresh off the press, the mood was somber at the International Shopping Centers (ICSC) Asia Expo 2008.

In the halls of The Venetian Macao- Resort-Hotel — the venue of the ICSC Asia Expo 2008 — discussions on the global economic downturn and its impact on the retail sector prevailed.

Still, industry players continued to be optimistic about the retail industry’s growth, particularly in the Asian region.

In her opening remarks for the event, which ran from October 14-16, Mary Lou Fiala, chairman of ICSC USA, noted that while consumer spending has been hampered by weak sentiment, “this is not to say that other economies are not thriving and retail sales are not expanding”.
