Most Internet users are online shoppers

INTERNET users in the Asia-Pacific are also heavy online shoppers, a survey conducted for credit-card firm Visa showed. The study by Ipsos indicated that 80% of the region’s Web users made online transactions, Visa stated.

Conducted between April and May last year, the survey polled 3,054 Internet users, aged 18-49, from Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Australia and India.

Internet users who shopped online had spent an average of US$3,000 each during the 12 months prior to the survey, said the card company. The findings noted that digital entertainment was most sought-after, with 59% of those polled stating they made related purchases online. The next most common
Internet transaction was travel, at 51%, followed by fashion, 49%.

The respondents also revealed that they spent the most money online for travel services, averaging US$812 in the 12 months to the survey. “Travel items included airline and rail tickets, hotel accommodation and travel packages,” Visa added. The convenience of being able to shop anytime, good prices and the ease at which transactions are made were listed by the company as the top three draws of online shopping.
