Anuga 2011 – a ‘giga-networking’ event for F&B professionals
Story 5 - Preview

FIVE months ahead of the biennial Anuga 2011, organiser Koelnmesse GmbH announced that the F&B trade show, which will be held from October 8-12, was “fully booked out”. About 6,500 exhibitors from over 100 countries are expected at this year’s event, scheduled to be held in Cologne, Germany. The ‘giga-networking’ event will showcase a wide spectrum of F&B products for the international community.

“Eighty-two per cent of our exhibitors and 63% of our visitors come from 180 countries. And when you know that there are only about 200 countries in the world, during these five days in October, [it’s as if] the whole world is in Cologne,” said Peter Grothues, vice-president of Food, Technology & Environment at Koelnmesse, at a press briefing held in Bangkok, Thailand, last month.

In true Anuga fashion, the event will house 10 specialised trade shows, a concept that was introduced in 2003. These are: Anuga Fine Food, Anuga Chilled & Fresh Food, Anuga Meat, Anuga Frozen Food, Anuga Dairy, Anuga Bread & Bakery and Hot Beverages, Anuga Drinks, Anuga FoodService, Anuga RetailTec and Anuga Organic.

Grothues mentioned that the new Anuga FoodService segment is a “logical extension” of the previous trade fair.

“The foodservice industry has picked up tremendously. With more automated tools in the kitchen and fewer people knowing how to cook, one of the ‘hot’ topics in the industry are ready-made meals. This has been brought on by lifestyle changes where people are working five or six days a week and have very little time to prepare their own meals,” Grothues told Retail Asia.

He added that the manufacturing industry, having picked up on this development, is now offering products for the trade and foodservice segments to meet the growing demand for such products.
