Story 11 - Special Reviews

THE 13th edition of SIAL China, which was staged at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre from May 9-11, was described by its organiser Comexposium Shanghai as "a huge unprecedented success".

The figures speak for themselves, said Bjoern Kempe, general manager of Comexposium Shanghai. The dedicated F&B trade show featured 1,750 exhibitors from 68 countries and regions, and attracted over 40,720 registered visitors.

"We are very happy with the show this year; we have a 15% growth in terms of exhibitors and 22% increase for visitors. There was a 16% growth in 2011 over 2010 in terms of exhibitor numbers. [So] in two years, we grew 31%," revealed Kempe in an interview with Retail Asia as the show came to a close.

The event occupied six halls across 73,200sqm of exhibition space, which represented an increase of 25% floor space over last year's show.

A total of 37 international pavilions participated at the show, with the top 10 international pavilions being France (74 exhibitors); the US (70); Spain (63); the Taiwan region (50); South Korea (40); Brazil (37); Poland (27); Japan (24); India (20); and Greece (19). The show also attracted exhibitors from 22 provinces and cities across China.

"We have new pavilions from Denmark, Belgium, Thailand, South Africa, Canada and Australia at this year's show," Kempe added.

In addition, SIAL China featured 13 products zones: Wine & Gourmet; Dairy; Sweets & Snacks; Organic; Tea & Coffee; Halal Food; Meat; Frozen Food; Seafood; Fruit & Vegetable; Chocolate World; Packaging; and Canned & Preserved Food.

Within the Wine & Gourmet World Shanghai zone, which also grew 25% over the previous year, nine pavilions were featured including Australia, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, South Africa, Spain and the US. In total, some 350 exhibiting companies participated in the Wine & Gourmet segment, which drew over 10,000 distributors and buyers.
